| Geosciences Launches “Road to Discovery” Recruitment Website |

09/23/09 - High school students interested in the geosciences have a new tool to help them narrow down their list of choices. The College of Geosciences recently launched a new website designed specifically for prospective students: The Road to Discovery (roadtodiscovery.tamu.edu). With a seemingly endless number of forms to fill out and factors to consider, applying to college can be a daunting process. The new site is designed to address that by answering the questions of high school age students who may be considering geosciences, and helping them choose a major and plan their transition from high school to college. “When students graduate from high school and head off to college, it’s often associated with ‘hitting the road,’” Director of Recruitment Sonia Garcia said. “So when we started looking at putting a site together for prospective students, we decided to play off that.” “The Road to Discovery site is designed to showcase all of the college’s departments and programs in an interactive, accessible, informative and fun way,” Garcia said. “We are trying to make the process of getting information and applying to college as seamless as possible for prospective students and their parents.” The site also integrates social media with links to Facebook (facebook.com/TAMUGeosciences) and to the college’s many videos on YouTube (youtube.com/tamugeosciences) on topics ranging from study abroad opportunities to features of faculty and students. “It’s important to connect with the millennial generation on their terms when it comes to matters of technology,” Garcia said. “So we’ve made a point of jumping head first into the social media that the prospective students are plugged into. That effort really came to fruition with the launch of ‘Road to Discovery’”. “In the past when I visited high schools and told students about the amazing academic and career opportunities within the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M, it wasn’t always easy to follow up with them,” Garcia said. “Now though, with the launch of ’Road to Discovery’, it will be easier for them not only to find the answer to almost any question, but to stay in touch by becoming a fan of the college on Facebook or subscribing to our YouTube feed.” For more information, contact Director of Recruitment, Dr. Sonia Garcia, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
